- Summary:
- T/5 Thomas Hahn was born October 5, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas. His father worked at a publishing company and stayed employed during the depression. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1943 and completed his basic training at Camp Roberts. He was assigned to the 32nd Division, 107th Medical Battalion and served as an ambulance driver. His unit was deployed to Milney Bay in New Guinea and from there they went to the Philippines. While carrying a stretcher along the Villa Verde Trail, he was wounded. After recovering from his wounds he joined his unit and served as part of the occupation forces stationed in Japan. Hahn was amazed at the medical procedures the MASH units implemented to save the lives of wounded soldiers, i.e. stainless steel plates were placed where bones had been shattered and the use of penicillin. He returned to the United States on Christmas Day and was discharged in 1946.
