T/5 Quincy Curtis was born March 6, 1924 in Rhodhiss, North Carolina. Rhodhiss was a cotton mill village and when the depression came his father had a hard time finding work. He remembers many nights going to sleep without having eaten anything all day. To escape the terrible living conditions, he joined the United States army on February 28, 1941. He was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division, 41st Infantry Regiment. He was a motorcycle messenger and rode a Harley Davidson 45. He went through five different motorcycles during the war. He landed in Casablanca then rode his motorcycle through Tunis and Morocco. He was with his unit when they landed at Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944. He was shot at several times but never hit. On one occasion he was almost captured by Germans; however, a French farmer hid him in his barn for two days until the Germans left. From Omaha Beach he moved through France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He was chosen for a 45 day furlough and was on his way home when the war ended.
