Harold Stephens served in the Army as a lineman and courier with the 246th Signal Operation Company. He landed in Normandy across Utah beach on 10 June 1944 then followed the font lines through Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He took part in the Battle of the Bulge and later crossed the Rhine River into Germany. Near the end of the war, his unit passed the concentration camp at Dachau just days after it had been liberated. Stephens was sickened at the sights he witnessed there. After the war, he returned to the United States and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of technician 5th grade (T5).
