Summary:
Ray Marcello served in the USAAF as a waist gunner on B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombers in the 568th Bombardment Squadron, 390th Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force. His first 14 missions included strikes in Normandy at the Pas De Calais, strikes on the invasion beaches on D-Day and a long shuttle mission to Russia. Marcello was shot down near Munich on his 15th mission and captured by the Germans. He spent several months as a POW before being liberated by the British Army's 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars, 7th Armored Division in the spring of 1945.
