Summary:

Samuel Mackey was born in Ireland and moved to the United States when he was nine years old. He joined the US Army Air Forces in 1942, was called in 1943, and trained to become a navigator. After completing his training he was assigned to a B-17 crew and shipped overseas to Italy where they joined the 483rd Bombardment Group. Mackey and his crew flew 27 combat missions over France, Germany, and Poland. Mackey flew his 28th mission with a different crew and was shot down. The pilot decided to crash land the plane and Mackey was thrown from the aircraft on impact. He eventually was picked up by Germans, taken to a hospital and spent the remainder of the war in a hospital.
