James E. Stumpfa joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1942. He served aboard the USS Bangor (PF-16) as an electrician's mate 1st class in the Mediterranean theatre, spending time in Algeria at a French naval base with German POWs. Stumpfa was discharged in 1946.
