Summary:

Raymond Uhrich was born on 2 March 1921 in Littleton, Colorado, but was eventually raised in Alliance, Nebraska. In 1939 he graduated high school and went to work for the Alliance Creamery Factory as a statistical quality clerk. When the war broke out, he was serving as a statistical quality clerk in Washington DC within the War Department. He left this job to become an aviation cadet and spent time in Denver, Colorado and Fort Leonard Wood. He went to college for 6 months and learned to fly a piper. He got his navigator wings in December 1943 and was assigned to a B-17 crew within the 369th Bombardment Squadron, 306th Bombardment Group. On his first mission he was shot down and became a POW. He was interrogated and then sent to Stalag Luft III and eventually served in other camps before being liberated from Stalag XIII-D.
