Elaborately drawn, colorful illustrations and poems chronicle Vasil's thoughts and feelings during his incarceration, as well as anecdotes and keen observations about the idiosyncrasies of camp life. His insightful sketches and writing are often optimistic and humorous, but a distinct and poignant feeling of pathos is evoked also, especially in Vasil's longing for home and family. Highlights include a description of his B-17 airplane crash and subsequent capture; a humorous "invitation" to Stalag Luft III; a hand-drawn copy of a circular letter distributed by the German High Command entitled "To all prisoners of war!
