Callaghan was a replacement in Headquarters Company, 27th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division; he volunteered for overseas duty in Hawaii and was sent to Iwo Jima as a litter bearer; he landed on the beach an hour and a half after the initial landing; he gives a very vivid account of how the island looked like during his landing; he would work with the corpsmen to pick up the wounded and bring them to the first aid station; he recalled seeing the two flag raisings on Mt. Suribachi; he also gave some vivid accounts of being pinned down by enemy gunfire a few days into the invasion and of some of the more seriously wounded Marines he encountered on the island.
