- Description: "A small group of Memorial Day weekend visitors to the Nation's Capitol was on hand at the Marine Corps War Memorial today to witness a symbolic scattering of earth from the capitol grounds of the 48 states. The "earth," collected by Mrs. James T. Leggett of Biloxi, Mississippi, was sprinkled at the base of the monument by Colonel R.F. Crist, Jr., Marine Corps Headquarters, assisted in the ceremony by Major G.J. King. Another bag of earth was placed beneath the monument, depicting the famous "flag raising" atop Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima, which is dedicated to Marines of all wars who have given their lives to their country. Arlington, Virginia.
