- Description: Mrs. G. J. Salter, Many, Louisiana to Capt. Damon J. Gause, Winder, Georgia. Mrs. Salter asks Captain Gause, who escaped from Bataan in the Philippines, if he has any information regarding her sons R. R. Salter (ASN: 1002883) and James D. Salter (ASN: 6267765) whom she has not heard from since Corregidor was surrendered (in May 1942, 7 months before writing the letter). Both Salter brothers were taken prisoner and survived the Bataan Death March, but R. R. was killed when a ship transporting prisoners back to Japan was sunk by an American submarine; presumably, James survived the war.
