- Description: This series consists of 26 pieces of military documents or correspondence regarding the service of Ensign Lewis Wheeler. The bulk of the collection consists of military correspondence informing Betty Wheeler Ensign Wheeler's personal property is being returned to her as well as also life insurance and death gratuity payments. Also included are certificate and notification of awards issued to Ensign Wheeler posthumously. Awards include: the Purple Heart, Navy Unit Commendation, and Air Medal.;Military correspondence, documents, newspaper clippings, and photographs from the service of Ensign Lewis Wheeler, who was killed in action on the Dutch Celebs [now Sulawesi], while serving with the Patrol Bombing Squadron 20 (VPB-20). The collection is arranged into three series: I. Documents concerning the death of Ensign Lewis Wheeler, 1945-1947; II. Military documents and correspondence, 1944-1948; and III. Prewar documents belonging to Lewis Wheeler, 1908-1945.
