Description: The Holy Bible. The edges of the Bible and many of the pages are stained with oil which was all around Graves as he floated in the sea; it was kept in his shirt pocket. Name of "T. Melvin Graves" (Thomas Melvin Graves) embossed on black, leather cover. Notes and signatures from loved ones written on front pages; ephemera inside Bible include clipping, cloth bookmark, prayer card, "Pocket Hymnal for Service Men." The Bible was Graves" only possession saved from the sinking of the USS Long (DD-209/DMS-12) and USS Hovey (DD-208/DMS-11).
