Summary:

Radioman 3rd Class Alfred Turnbull was born November 2, 1926 in New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was 17, his Dad signed for him to join the United States Navy. Turnbull did his advanced training at Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. He trained as a radio operator, learning Morse code. He is an African American and had to wait 5 weeks before they had enough African American Sailors to train the new group of radio operators. He was stationed in Hawaii and responsible for receiving messages from the Pacific and advancing them to the main land. The unit he worked with in Hawaii was integrated; however, their sleeping and eating quarters were segregated. At the conclusion of the war Turnbull returned to New Orleans and went to work for the U.S. Postal service for 30 years.
