GM2 Campo was born 8 February 1923 in Paincourtville, Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard, September 1942. He was assigned to the transport ship FS-194 and later transferred to FS-396. These ships transferred supplies throughout the Pacific. The ships were small consisting of a crew of 4 officers and 21 enlisted personnel. When the war concluded he was discharged in March of 1946 and returned to Louisiana.
