Summary:

Captain Charles DeArmond was born 5 March 1920 in Reno, Nevada. Charles was in the ROTC program studying chemical engineering when the war broke out. He enlisted in the United States Army and was initially trained to be a chemical engineer in the European Theater of the war. After four months of training as a chemical engineer, he was transferred to the 765th Dump Truck Company with the Army Corp of Engineers. Charles was responsible for a company of 48 dump trucks which constructed airfields and roads on Guadalcanal. In 1943 his unit was helping to build a hospital in Manila, Philippines for the invasion of Japan. Fortunately that invasion never took place. He was assigned as part of the occupation force in Japan and transferred supplies in the effort to rebuild Japan. During his time there, he took a ride aboard a United States airplane and flew over Hiroshima. He said "after seeing Hiroshima I understand why the Japanese surrendered." He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the United States.
