- Roy M. Hanna served in the Army as a paratrooper in 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. After training in North Africa he took part in the invasion of Sicily. He also fought in Italy where he earned the Distinguished Service Cross for charging a German position after he had been shot. Hanna spent some time in the hospital after that having fluid drained from his lungs. He returned to combat and took part in Operation Market Garden and was part of the second wave to cross the Waal River. Hanna missed the Battle of the Bulge because on R&R. He had been sent home before the end of the war as part of a lottery to allow troops to go home early.
