Summary:

PFC Marvin Korte was born 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Marvin was drafted into the United States Army in 1944 and assigned to a mortar squad with the 84th Infantry Division. Within his squad they rotated positions. He carried the base plate, was an ammo barrier and observer, and the gunner at times. Initially he trained in an anti-aircraft unit; however, they needed men for the infantry and he was transferred to an infantry unit. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and remembers very well the harsh climate. After the Battle of the Bulge, around the Rhine River, he was severely wounded from an artillery blast which sprayed shrapnel in his back, arms, and legs. All he remembers was hoping the medics would get to him in time. He regained consciousness at a field hospital in France and was then transferred to England. Once he gained enough strength, he was transferred back to the United States aboard the hospital ship the Queen Elizabeth. He believes the only thing which kept him alive was the strong doses of penicillin he received. Marvin was discharged in 1946 and returned to St. Louis, Missouri.
