- Goldman was a navigator on a B-24 and flew 35 missions over Europe; through all of his missions none of his crew was injured and they were never shot down; his closest call was when he was on his ninth mission over the oil refineries over Mainz, Germany; his squadron was caught in the prop wash of the plane in front of him and they had trouble holding their position; the lead plane stalled out and collided with another plane and both planes headed towards Goldman's plane and missed it by approximately four feet; another noteworthy mission was his first one over Kiel, Germany; he passed out from lack of oxygen before he reached his destination.
