Summary:

Metal Smith 2nd Class (ME2c); 20 mm Anti-aircraft gunner; before the war he lied about his age when he was 16 and got a job as a welder for a shipyard in Orange, TX; he worked there for one year before joining the Navy; he took his boot training at the Naval Training Center (NTC) at San Diego then trained as a landing craft operator at Oceanside, CA; he was sent to Hawaii where he boarded the USS Bingham (APA225); he was assigned as a LCM (Landing Craft, Mechanized) coxswain but when it was discovered that he could weld he was assigned to be a Metal Smith; his work station was at the rear of the ship and when the ship went to General Quarters he would man a 20mm gun; he spent most of his time repairing landing craft; he ended up going to Okinawa during the invasion; the ship unloaded men and supplies day and night.
