Summary:

Anne Cravens had graduated from college and just completed her trip to Europe when the ship she was travelling aboard, the SS Athenia, was struck by a torpedo fired by the German submarine U-30. The passengers and crew had conducted an escape drill earlier on the day the ship was torpedoed. After being hit, the power went out. Cravens and a few other girls stayed together and put on life jackets. They were placed into life boats and lowered into the water. They were adrift for several hours before they were picked up early in the morning by a Norwegian yacht. They were later transferred to another ship that took them to Halifax.
