Summary:

An interview with Robert W. Filkosky, I Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division in WWII. Interview conducted in the NWW2M Studio on 13 June 2014. Filkosky served on Saipan until he was wounded in the leg, missed Tinian while recovering from his wounds and made the invasion of Iwo Jima. He was shot in the head (by two bullets in the same spot) just after the amphitheater and near the airfield number 2. His wounds took him out of combat and at the time he was one of the last, if not the last surviving member of his original platoon. He missed the first actions at Roi-Namur due to a court martial for telling a lie about his age when enlisting which caused him to spend 60 days in the brig and pay a $100 fine. He shipped out after serving his time and met up with his unit as they were returning from combat in the Marshall Islands. He was a BAR gunner on Saipan, but by Iwo Jima was a Sergeant and carried an M1. Also of note, he was in the same platoon with Lee Marvin on Saipan and they became great friends. For many years after the war they kept in touch and Filkosky moved out to LA and spent about 20 years as friends with Marvin. He also was present at his funeral after Marvin's death.
