- Fred Wendorf served in the Army as an officer in Company G, 2nd Battalion, 86th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division and took part in combat operations in Italy. He was separated from service after the war with the rank of first lieutenant. For wounds he received in combat, Wendorf was awarded the Purple Heart Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
