John DeFoore was born 12 June 1919 in Siding, Mississippi. John and his three brothers grew up on a farm. During the depression the Defoores had little money; however, he never remembers going hungry. He was in the Mississippi National Guard when the war started. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, he first saw combat in New Guinea. John was sent by his Commanding Officer to live in the jungle with island people so he could train officers on survival tactics for the harsh climate of New Guinea. He lived in the jungle for three weeks with a local person who he knew as Googooba. His jungle training proved to be beneficial for him personally. From New Guinea he fought in the Philippines. While in the Philippines he got separated from his unit and spent, what he believed to be about 30 days, in the jungle by himself. He would hide in the day and try to find help in the evening. When he was about to lose hope, he was found by an American patrol and returned home. He spent the rest of the war recovering in a hospital. John is an intellectual who earned a PhD and has contemplated and theorized a great deal about war and what it means to kill someone. At 96 he still works daily as a consultant in Boerne, Texas.
