Summary:

Leroy James was born in Franklinton, Louisiana in 1924. His parents were farmers and Leroy remembers as a child helping his father work on the farm. When the war began with Japan, he enlisted in the United States Army and trained to be an infantry rifleman. He was eventually transferred to the 350th Anti-Aircraft Battalion and was stationed in New Guinea. In New Guinea his unit guarded an airfield which the Japanese constantly tried to destroy. While Leroy was in New Guinea he caught Dengue Fever, which hospitalized him for two weeks. He reported never feeling so sick in his life. When MacArthur re-took the Philippines, his unit was moved to Manila; where, they were dismantled as an anti-aircraft unit and reassigned as guards for the city of Manila. Leroy was assigned to guard the residence where General MacArthur, his wife, and son lived. When the war concluded, Leroy returned to Louisiana and went to college on the GI Bill. He became a school teacher and eventually the Principal of Madisonville Elementary School.
