Summary:

Arthur Wolde was born in Astoria, NY on 5 November 1917 and grew up in Medford, NY. He graduated high school in 1936 and went to work for a few years until being drafted on 8 July 1941. After being inducted at Governor's Island, NY he was sent to Fort Dix, NJ where he was assigned to the US Army Medical Corps. From Fort Dix Wolde was sent to Fort Lee, VA for 16 weeks of basic training as a medic with the 451st Medical Clearing Company, 68th Medical Group after which he was sent to Camp Forrest, TN where he remained until 26 November 1943. On 26 November Wolde's unit was sent to Camp Shanks, NY where they received their pre-deployment shots then boarded the Queen Elizabeth for the fourteen day trip to Great Britain. At about midnight on their third day out the ship came to a complete stop and the word was passed for everyone aboard to be silent. Thinking that there was a German u boat in the area the 17000 GIs aboard were scared stiff! Fortunately, after a few hours the ship started up again and continued on its way. Wolde landed in Edinburgh, Scotland and was put on a train to Reading where they arrived on 24 December 1943. That would be their home for the next six months. There they did a lot of training in England. They practiced loading wounded soldiers onto C47 cargo planes and water proofing their vehicles. They also had a bit of down time. When he could Wolde would go into London but mostly he went into the small towns around Reading.
