Salvatore Castro served in the Army as a BAR gunner in the 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division and took part in combat operations on New Guinea, Morotai, and Leyte. On Leyte in January 1945 he was wounded by shrapnel from a grenade and evacuated to Hollandia, New Guinea. He was discharged from the army as a private first class (PFC).
