Summary:

CMS Charles Dragich was born October 14, 1916 in Alliance, Ohio. His parents migrated from Romania and his mother never learned to speak English. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp September 13, 1938 and was assigned to the 19th Air Base Group at Nichols Field in Manila, Philippines. He trained as an airplane mechanic and worked on a variety of planes. When the Philippines fell to the Japanese, he was captured and survived the Bataan Death March. He spent the next three and a half years as a Japanese prisoner of war. At O'Donnell prison camp, he managed to survive the zero ward with a life threatening case of malaria. He was transferred from O'Donnell prison camp to the prison camp in Mukden, Manchuria. In Mukden he worked a variety of factory jobs. Once, he was beaten by Japanese prison guards for falling asleep while working. Dragich was awarded the Bronze Star, POW Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal and a Purple Heart. After the war he decided to make a career in the USAF reaching the rank of Chief Master Sgt.
