Summary:

Sam Meyer was born in 1924 and grew up in New Orleans. He was drafted into the US Military in March 1943 and inducted into the USAAF. He was sent to Miami Beach, Florida for basic training after which he went to Buckley Field, Colorado for armament school. After completing armament school Meyer was assigned to the 485th Fighter Squadron, 370th Fighter Group. In January 1944 the groups P-47 Thunderbolt fighters were taken away and they received 75 new P-38 Lightening fighters. Then the group boarded the British ocean liner RMS Mauretania and steamed for Liverpool, England. There were 8000 servicemen aboard the ship and after standing in the chow line one time, Meyer did not get into it again. Instead, he stayed in his bunk and ate chocolate bars for the duration of the voyage. After going ashore in Liverpool, Meyer and the rest of his outfit were packed onto a train that took them to Andover where they took over a former RAF aerodrome. In May 1944, about four months after the group arrived in England, the 370th Fighter Group flew its first combat mission. There were a number of high ranking officers present for the launching of the planes. The first to take off was the group commander.
