- Seaman 1st Class (S1c); Thrasher was drafted into the navy and was assigned to the USS Yorktown (CV5); he was an ammo loader for number four mount; he recalls many of the details from the Marshall and Gilbert Islands raids; he also recalls the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway; after the Battle of the Coral Sea he helped many of the injured sailors; after the USS Yorktown (CV5) was sunk he helped put injured sailors into rescue boats until he himself was rescued; he was sent to Hawaii to recover and was later assigned to the USS West Virginia (BB48).
