Description: This series consists of 92 envelopes featuring illustrations by Private First Class Joseph Blackburn. PFC Blackburn was in the Pacific Theater of Operations for the entirety of this series. In Feb 1945, the 5th Engineer Battalion, 5th Marine Division deployed from Hawaii to Japan and participated in the Battle of Iwo Jima. After the Iwo Jima was secured, PFC Blackburn’s unit was sent to Tientsin, China, and then back to Sasebo, Japan. In Dec 1945, he was transferred to the Second Separate Engineer Company before being sent back to the United States in Feb 194 The recipients were his parents, William and Sophia Blackburn, and sister, Muriel Blackburn, in Berlin, Connecticut.
