Description: 2001.100.1 Gray and white cotton seersucker, designed by Mainbocher. The members of the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve or SPARs as they were termed, were statistically the smallest women's reserve unit in World War II. Congress created this reserve unit on November 23, 1942. Between 1942 and the end of World War II, more than 10,000 women served in the SPARs. SPARs were issued WAVE uniforms but SPARs were distinguished from WAVE uniforms by distinctive United States Coast Guard cloth and metal insignia on their uniforms. This summer uniform was issued to Mary Mills Weinmann, who served in the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve between September 16, 1943 and September 30, 1945. She was assigned to New Orleans, Louisiana, at the Coast Guard Port Authority. Mrs. Weinmann served as a SPAR on a part time basis, for 307 days. The rank on this uniform is that of an ensign, but she was promoted prior to discharge to Lt.
