'Official caption on front: "(WX3 - Aug.27) -- New use for the Army Mule --- A mighty handy burden bearer in New Guinea, the army mule now has been equipped with a new litter in which wounded men can be transported out of the jungle. Testing the new litter are Pvt. Herman Jamnicke of Tucson, Ariz. [Arizona], leading the mule and Sgt. John W. Nalson, also of Tucson, who steadies the litter to keep it from rocking too much. (AP Wirephoto from Signal Corps (c61245)4"' On reverse is newspaper clipping with same image but different caption: "Ambulance' -- A new type non-mechanized ambulance -- our old friend the army mule - works out in New Guinea jungles in this test. One man leads the mule while the other steadies the specially built litter to keep it from tipping as the 'casuality' is taken back to hospital.".
