- Description: "(April 28, 1944) Marine Pilot Wins Air Medal. Marine First Lt. James Gilbert Percy, 23 of 1807 ½ No. Highland Ave, Hollywood, Calif. Received the Air Medal from Major General Ross E. Rowell, commanding general, Marine Air Wings, Pacific, at a hospital in Pearl Harbor, as Navy Nurse Lt. (jg) Frances L. Little of Winterville, N.C. looks on. Lt. Percy returning from a mission in the Russell Islands on June 7, 1943, when he encountered a formation of six Zeros. He shot down two before a third's cannon fire sent his plane into a spin. He bailed out but his parachute failed to function and he hit the water. Unable to swim because of his injuries, Lt. Percy drifted in his "Mae West" life jacket to a nearby island where friendly natives rescued him. Lt. Percy also holds the Distinguished Flying Cross." Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
