Summary:

Description: This series consists of 20 pieces of military, government, or personal correspondence along with three certificates regarding the death of Brent Loring, Torpedoman’s Mate First Class. The correspondence includes telegrams sent to Loring’s wife, Mrs. Elda Loring, informing her that he was considering missing in action and later that he was classified as killed in action. Mrs. Loring also received regret and sympathy letters from Captain Pratt of the USS Bismarck Sea, USNR Chaplain James Forrestal, members of the Phi Alpha Chi fraternity, Department of water and power of Los Angeles, P.J. Hardy, City of Los Angeles War Council, and Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowron. The telegram informing Loring’s parents of his death is also included. The certificates in the series were awarded to Loring posthumously. He received a Purple Heart certificate and Mrs. Loring was given a memorial letter certificate signed by President Roosevelt along with a personalized memorial booklet from the City Council of the City of Los Angeles.
