Correspondence focuses on personal matters, news of friends and family, and life in Charlottesville, especially his rigorous curriculum as he prepared for administrative duties in the occupied Europe; Deutsch attended the School of Military Government in Charlottesville, Virginia, until May 1943, and then travelled to Fort Meade, Indiana, before sailing overseas at the end of May; spent the rest of the summer completing additional training in North Africa, and his letters to Rhea dwell on homesickness and describe fellow students, all officers, and some of their work, including language classes and government lectures; 19 July 1943, Deutsch is finally able to discuss the Allied invasion of Sicily, and to tell Rhea that he will be stationed somewhere on Sicily with the AMGOT [Allied Military Government for Occupied Territories.].
