- This research study explores how patterns of behavior and intuition during simulation differ by years of experience among heads of independent schools. While literature on intuition, and training practitioners to develop it, in fields like nursing (Lasater, 2007) and the military (Bakken and Gilliam, 2003) have long existed, little has been done in the field of education to study it or mobilize ways to train it. This qualitative study with an embedded quantitative strand (timing and decision patterns) specifically focuses on how novice and veteran independent school heads make decisions during a simulation designed around a specific independent school leadership challenge and how they reflect on it after completion. The research identifies the ways the two groups of participants respond to their own affective charge, the speed with which they make decisions, and how intuition is a dynamic cognitive process deeply shaped by experience. This study contends that intuition can be examined, understood, and developed and that it is imperative for leadership programs and universities to do so
