- Declining vaccination uptake in the US since 2020 has raised concerns about the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on vaccine acceptance more broadly. Information about COVID-19 vaccines may have affected determinants of non-COVID vaccine (NCV) uptake, such as trust in the vaccine system. This dissertation examines whether and how COVID-19 vaccine information produces spillover effects on existing and novel NCVs. Study 1a (N = 403), an experimental study testing the effect of COVID-19 vaccine safety and efficacy information salience, found that increased salience decreased attitudes toward seasonal flu and mRNA bird flu vaccines, intentions to get mRNA bird flu vaccines, and trust in information from federal agencies. Study 1b (N = 235) examined the effect of exposure to COVID-19 vaccine information following the recission of universal COVID-19 vaccine recommendations and found mixed spillover effects: greater information exposure was associated with more negative beliefs about the safety of all vaccines but more positively associated with efficacy beliefs, attitudes, and intentions toward select established and novel vaccines. Study 2 (N = 1,199) experimentally tested the effect of exposure to a negative news story about COVID-19 vaccines to control for variations in information exposure that could explain the mixed results of Study 1b. The experiment found no effect of negative news exposure on pediatric flu vaccine beliefs, attitudes, or intentions but did find that exposure decreased trust in federal agencies that license, monitor, and recommend vaccines and increased negative affect. Study 3 included a content analysis of national newspaper and television news coverage of COVID-19 vaccines in December 2020 to July 2021. Study 4 combined this analysis with longitudinal panel data (N = 5,866) collected during the same time frame to estimate the effect of exposure opportunities on childhood vaccine beliefs. Changes in exposure opportunities to COVID-19 vaccine news coverage were not associated with changes in vaccine beliefs but increases in exposure opportunities to contextualized or unrefuted COVID-19 vaccine adverse event claims were associated with decreases in trust in the vaccine system. Together, these studies suggest spillover effects of COVID-19 vaccine information are context- and vaccine-specific and may occur indirectly through changes in trust in the vaccine system. Future research should examine the conditions under which spillover effects occur and whether trust mediates these effects
