Summary:
Despite nearly two decades of research on nudges-small, unobtrusive changes to messaging, layout, processes, or incentives-and hundreds of organizations applying them worldwide, we struggle to predict how well a given nudge will work in a new context. This dissertation shows why, building a novel database of 280 richly coded nudge experiments and comparing it to past databases: the existing literature reflects systematically biased subsets of studies, and after-the-fact analysis of published results cannot compensate for what's missing. It then demonstrates-with a highly coordinated field megastudy-how designing research with generalization in mind from the start offers a more promising path toward cumulative knowledge
