- As both the most Democratic-leaning and religiously devout racial group in the United States, Black Americans defy expectations about how religiosity and partisanship inform one another. This dissertation thus questions how Black Church culture influences how Black Americans map their moral beliefs onto their available political options. I put forth a theory of "moral-political socialization" to explain how Black churches impart lasting and distinct religious and political preferences for Democrats. I argue that Black Americans who have been persistently exposed to religious messaging from the Black Church identify policies put forth by Democrats as most in line with Christian values. This is accomplished by Black Church culture's effect on Black Americans' application of their faith to politics. Using a novel measure of Black Church culture, I find that as exposure to Black Church culture increases, so does Black Americans' tendency to reconcile conservative religious beliefs and/or moral stances with more liberal policy preferences in the same issue area. I explore moral and policy preferences relating to gender and abortion to support my argument
