"The so-called "Freedom Convoy" that stormed Ottawa in 2022 did not come "out of nowhere", nor was it solely the product of foreign interference. The far-right, which organized and amplified the occupation, has had a Canadian presence since at least the 1920s. There has been a surge in online activity from Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremist (IMVE) groups over the last decade and their extremist views are increasingly intertwined with other online groups including incels, QAnon, anti-government groups, and various conspiracy-based movements. While attention has focused on religiously motivated violent extremism, the threat from IMVE has been overshadowed, both in scholarship and in the policy response. This remains true, even as Canada has seen a steady rise in gruesome attacks, often targeting Muslim citizens. The worrying rise in far-right activity has led the government to proscribe various neo-fascist accelerationists. This book illuminates IMVE/far-right threats in Canada. It both presents a history of this movement and an overview of current groups/trends. It also explores why individuals join and leave these movements and how they are financed and facilitated. It concludes by offering targeted policy recommendations and discusses their implications.
