""Countermemory: A Rhetoric of Resistance" is the first monograph to investigate the interdisciplinary dimensions of countermemory through a rhetorical lens. O'Brien and Sanchez define countermemory as a marginalized - and often erased - configuration of remembering that resituates the narratives of the oppressed or forgotten as equal to dominant narratives that often contain the same historical evidence. Where public memories are defined by the rhetorical choices people and communities make in choosing how they memorialize, historicize, and communally remember people and events, countermemories do the same while also emphasizing the tensions that arise when such memories are contested through marginalized or oppressed memories. O'Brien and Sanchez posit that countermemory is a uniquely rhetorical form that can be defined by its discursive and non-discursive resistance, its emphasis on (re)remembering injustices or inequalities, and its reminders of "the presentness of the past" (Legg). To make this argument, they draw upon a mixed-methodological approach that includes site-based analysis, participant observation, textual analysis, and historiography, all of which they apply to physical locations - like memorial sites and museums - but also in digital spaces like music videos, tv shows, and maps to show the different ways that countermemory may exist. While countermemory, as a theory and practice, extends to a variety of contexts, O'Brien and Sanchez focus primarily on countermemory in the American South, and by extension, countermemory that deals with Black, Latinx, and Indigenous individuals and histories"-- Provided by publisher.
