Literary translation involves more than just a transfer into another language: A book’s physical design likewise forms an integral part of the translation process. This study explores how changes in layout, image-text relations or book format in the course of translation can shift the meaning of literary works. Based on approaches from translation studies and book history, the concept of ‘material translation’ is developed and its relevance for the critical examination of translated literature elaborated. Analyses of selected photo-texts are supplemented by qualitative interviews with practitioners from the fields of publishing and translation, as well as previously unpublished archival materials from the estate of W. G. Sebald. Eine literarische Übersetzung leistet mehr als einen rein sprachlichen Transfer: Auch die materielle Gestaltung eines Buches ist integraler Teil des Übertragungsprozesses. Diese Studie zeigt, wie Veränderungen von Layout, Bild-Text-Relation oder Buchformat im Zuge der Übersetzung den Bedeutungsgehalt verschieben können. Basierend auf Ansätzen aus den Translations- und Buchwissenschaften wird das Konzept der ‚materiellen Übersetzung‘ entwickelt und seine Relevanz für die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit übersetzter Literatur herausgearbeitet. Analysen ausgewählter Foto-Texte werden ergänzt durch qualitative Interviews mit Akteur*innen aus der Verlags- und Übersetzungspraxis sowie durch bislang unveröffentlichte Archivalien aus dem Nachlass W. G. Sebalds.
