- Summary:
- "'Invasion' or 'conquest'? How to categorize the Dutch presence in 17th-century Brazil? Much more than the mere use of this or that term, what Regina de Carvalho Ribeiro da Costa presents in this publication is a consistent discussion of the historiography produced on Flemish domination in the sugar-producing captaincies of northeastern Brazil in colonial Brazil between 1624 and 1654. It was with Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen that the perception of a Brazil 'invaded' by the Dutch, and focused on Luso-Brazilian resistance, became established in the 19th century. A product of Lusophile historiography, Varnhagen's vision can still be seen today in textbooks and manuals, also used by the author, deconstructing heroes and villains that have populated the national memory, such as, in this case, Maurice of Nassau and Domingos Fernandes Calabar. However, it was in the 20th and 21st centuries that a shift towards critical historiography occurred, where the reader will perceive a 'Dutch Brazil,' demonstrated by the effective interaction of the Flemish with colonial society, rather than as mere foreign invaders" -- Back cover, machine-translated.
