Summary:

With her idiosyncratic, colorfully painted wooden sculptures, the American-Venezuelan artist Marisol (1930-2016) rose to sudden fame in 1960s New York. She combined pop culture, Dada, folklore, and self-portraiture to create distinctive, often satirical ensembles. This rediscovery demonstrates just how relevant and powerful Marisol's art remains to this day. Marisol was one of the most radical and visionary artists of her generation. With a keen eye and wit, her works address central questions of her time--and of our own present: the role of women, social inequalities, consumer culture, and the dynamics of power and fame. Although she produced an innovative body of work spanning five decades, Marisol largely faded into obscurity. This publication presents her oeuvre through approximately 100 works drawn from every creative phase, while also shedding light on Marisol's connections to Europe.
