The collection is dominated by manuscripts collected by Francis Henry Egerton and Sir Hans Sloane whose holdings centered on areas of Latin America of interest to the British Empire after the 18th and 19th centuries. The Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico are particular strengths. Also includes "The Venezuela Papers," a collection of 40 manuscript volumes of official letters and documents relating to the Spanish occupation of Trinidad, Margarita, Guiana, Venezuela and other adjacent provinces and islands and to their differences there with the English, dating from 1530 to 1824.
