Summary:
Rosalie Edge was born November 3, 1877 in New York City where she later attended Wagner College. She was active in the women's suffrage movement but shifted her focus to the environment after the passage of the women's suffrage amendment in 1920. Due to her concern for wild birds, Edge became active in the National Audubon Society. She later launched a successful personal campaign within the society for changes in leadership personnel, particularly as her efforts narrowed their focus on the preservation of predatory bird. The accomplishment that Edge is most recognized for is the establishment of the Hawk Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary in southeastern Pennsylvania. The Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was the first to be established for birds of prey. It was administered by the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association, which Edge organized in 1936. She was the director and president until her death in 1962. This collection contains information on the Emergency Conservation Committee, which Rosalie Edge established in 1929 as well as material on the upheaval in the administration of the National Audubon Society from 1929-1938, the activities of the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Association, and the establishment of Kings Canyon National Park. Also included in the collection is correspondence, newsletters, published articles, and statements. Researchers using this collection will find material on activities, trends, and ideas of the conservation movement in America from the 1930s to the late 1950s.
