- Summary:
- The Institute of Government Studies Library is one of the major collections in the United States on public administration, public affairs, and public policy. It was created to provide research expertise to the the California legislature regarding public issues of the day. The library holds a wealth of material on conservation and environmental policy from the period when environmental concerns emerged as a major area of interest for activists and politicians. This collection of publications comprises a nationwide assemblage of reports, newsletters, circulars, and other grey literature issued by state agencies, municipal departments, and regional associations. Publications cover a vast array of topics relating to conservation and environmental issues, including material on national parks, dams, water rights, reports on game, birds and fish, land management, legislation, fire prevention, air pollution, forestry, oil, gas and the extraction of other natural resources, irrigation and hydroelectricity. These publications were produced by many different organizations concerned with the natural environment, such as the West Virginia Water Commission, the Environmental Defence Fund, the International Institute for Environmental Affairs, Friends of the Earth, California Conservation Council and Save the Redwoods League as well as official publications from state and federal level commissions and departments.
