- Summary:
- In 1887, Grinnell and others joined Theodore Roosevelt in founding the Boone and Crockett Club, an organization of sportsmen and conservationists devoted to the protection of wildlife. He served as president of the club from 1918 until 1927. He was instrumental in the establishment of two other conservationist groups, the Audubon Society and the American Game Association. Following Grinnell's efforts to establish national parks, he was elected president of the National Parks Association in 1925. He was instrumental in the fight to forbid the killing of game in national parks and was the primary leader in the creation of Glacier National Park. A glacier in that park is named for him. Grinnell published throughout his lifetime including, The Cheyenne Indians (1889), Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk Tales (1889), Blackfoot Lodge Tales (1892), Punishment of Stingy & Other Indian Stories (1901), The Indians of Today (1911), and By Cheyenne Campfires (1926). This bulk of this collection is focused on Grinnell's career from the 1890s onwards, where researchers will find a wealth of material on wildlife preservation, natural history, the American West and its indigenous populations and material relating to Grinnell's role as a prolific author of books and articles on these subjects.
