- J R R Tolkien, orphaned at four, went on to fight in the Battle of the Somme. As he left for France, he wrote "junior officers were being killed off, a dozen a minute. Parting from my wife then ... it was like a death." The scale and destruction of the battles witnessed by Tolkien characterise the world of all of his work. They contain landscapes of hellfire itself. The most extraordinary and dangerous life of all was lived by Erskine Childers, writer of The Riddle of the Sands, who moved from being a British patriot to being shot in Ireland as a traitor. At his execution, he asked that the firing squad step forward to make it easier for them, after shaking each one of them by the hand. His son became the president of Ireland. These Golden Age writers wrote through their own sorrows and turned them into something wonderful. Their world is an extraordinary world, telling us both much about the writers themselves and the position of Britain itself in the transforming period of its history from 1865 until 1940 - and ourselves. Generation after generation discover these writers, and the books are still with us.
